Specimen trees from Specialty Oaks bring the beauty and character of native oaks to hundreds of landscapes across California. Our trees are flourishing in projects ranging from the Pacific Coast to valleys, foothills and mountain elevations up to 6,000 feet.
Our wide selection of trees provides landscape professionals the opportunity to enlarge their design palette to include oaks for projects in most California and western state growing zones.
The five species of California native oaks that we ship represent the finest characteristics and attributes of native stock. We feature trees that are disease and drought resistant, tolerant of temperature extremes in both summer and winter, and that adapt readily to diverse planting environments.

Quercus agrifolia
coastal live oak
Coastal live oaks are evergreen trees featuring a dense, hemispherical crown with widespread limbs. They thrive along coastal regions up to an elevation of 5,000 feet. |
|
Quercus douglasii
blue oak
Blue oaks are deciduous trees that excel in shallow soils in hot dry climates and are very drought tolerant. They feature a compact, round canopy and grow best in elevations below 3,500 feet. |
|
Quercus kelloggii
black oak
Black oaks are hardy, deciduous trees noted for their fall colors. They are tall trees with ascending limbs and feature an open, round canopy. They flourish in upland areas between 2,000 to 6,000 feet. |
|
Quercus lobata
valley oak
Valley oaks are deciduous trees that thrive in deep, fertile soils and are noted for their fast growth rate. They are the largest of the California native oaks, growing up to 90 feet in height. Featuring a round, spreading canopy, they thrive in hot, dry summers and can grow in altitudes up to 5,000 feet. |
|
Quercus wislizenii
interior live oak
Interior live oaks are evergreen trees that are broad, densely branched, and feature a full, rounded canopy. They are the most tolerant of temperature extremes of all California oaks, and thrive from valley bottom land to mountain slopes below 5,000 feet. |
